Far North Coast Baseball
A statement from Far North Coast Baseball Far North Coast baseball Association has a long history in successfully hosting a huge number of baseball events at local, state and international levels. We have watched a lot of commentary in recent days on us, our weather, and our ability to host tournaments. We acknowledge that many have been saying that it’s no comment on our volunteers etc and appreciate those who have been supportive, however I must say when you comment on the event, the weather, "our history" etc you are commenting on us as a whole.Yes it rains here, it rains most places on the east coast at this time of year. I will however highlight that there is some facts missing from the commentary, we very rarely have a total disruption of games. Our fields are as resilient as our town, our people, and our volunteers. Our fields bounce back remarkably quickly and we do everything in our power to make games happen. What we can’t plan for is unexpected heavy rainfall. We have hardly had a week without rain since a cyclone event headed south, to be clear a cyclone heading south has happened before (not often) but not the continual rain that has followed that event. We were aware of the challenge we faced and planned as best we could alongside the tournament conveners. Our local competition hasn’t been able to get on the fields either, again (despite some ill informed commentary to the contrary) this is an exceedingly rare event and you will need to go back a very long way in history to find a similar situation where we havent been able to play local baseball. In fact many of the weekdays have been fine and the fields all but ready to play only to be thwarted by rainfall on Friday and Saturday, again this is exceedingly rare and very unpredictable.FNCBA is incredibly proud to host events and are honoured to be entrusted with them. We take our responsibility seriously and the fact that we got games on the diamond yesterday is a testament to our volunteers and our fields ability to cope with this weather. There were games held successfully here and at our cross border neighbours at the Gold Coast early in the week without disruption. We understand the frustrations voiced with the need to move postpone, delay, and ultimately cancel games, no one wants this. I think it is important to remind everyone that we are baseballing families too and as a regional association we really understand the effort and costs associated with travel. We have to travel considerable distances to most events we wish to compete in as an association. We have experienced the disappointments of rain delays and cancellations first hand at many different venues at many different tournaments but as any association who travels knows it is always a risk and you do your best to let the kids have a good time and build some core memories. We truly get it, however what is frustrating is to see some comments about “of course it’s going to rain, it’s Lismore” etc etc. We do not proclaim we are a “desert” here……but we do offer a large amount of fields and diamonds and options. Every association that puts their hand up for a tournament knows how much work goes into these things and no one wants to cancel or stop games being played. We have it seems been made a target for criticism and significant reputational risk for putting our hand up to host these events, again we do not proclaim it doesn’t rain here. BUT even with rain we have shown time and time again that we can still run a tournament and get the prescribed games through. Indeed looking over the last couple of years tournaments we have hosted it is rare that we have dropped an innings, shortened games, or cancelled games. Was it wet ? Yes. But did the games go on? Yes they did and we got through the whole tournament. In fact often we get through more games in a tournament than those hosted elsewhere at a similar time of the year, to be clear this isn’t a criticism of other associations or venues rather than a reflection on our fields ability to cope with adverse weather. We are not going to buy into the conspiracy theories about payments and deals…..we are not going to dissuade those with this point of view who continually bring up this commentary when provided an opportunity. FNCBA are simply here to try and provide the best experience we can, even in the rain. We continue to work on our fields and plan to do what we can to make them as playable despite what the weather throws at us. Those who attended this year will note the new “hub” building and toilets and the concrete paths to the fields. Constant improvement is the goal. We are disappointed as everyone that we couldn’t get all the games through this time but felt we needed to comment and to temper some of the commentary with a little perspective and to request that people give some thought prior to commenting on the “ridiculousness” of hosting events in Lismore. It is very rare that we don’t get through a tournament, this year it got the better of us but this is the exception not the rule.We appreciate everyone who thanked our volunteers over the last week. We thank Baseball Australia for entrusting us to host the tournament and we hope to see everyone again soon. In the meantime before you comment spare a thought on the people who do their utmost to make these tournaments happen, just take a second and consider what they have done and sacrificed to get things off the ground. Is everything perfect? No but no one is claiming that it is. Did a whole range of people do their best to get the kids on the park? Yes they did. Was it the outcome anyone wanted ? No but everyone did their best to make it a success and deal with the situation best they could. This includes organisers, hosts, players, coaches, umpires, volunteers, EO’s and parents. Everyone wants to see the kids play….and despite everything going on I saw plenty of smiling kids playing with their mates, making new friends and new experiences, kids it seems will always make the most of things. To our FNCBA volunteers and everyone who helped out, thank you. Words cannot articulate how important you are to us and our sport. Don’t let any criticism sit with you, don’t feel you need to engage with those criticising us, or our venue, our weather. Those who really sit back and consider things knows how hard you work and how you threw everything we could at getting games on and completed. If commenting becomes unruly then comments will be turned off on this post. The purpose is not to spawn or create argument rather it is an opportunity to put forward a view “from the other side” and to acknowledge and thank all those who helped to host the tournament.
